2023 FLOOD UPDATE
As many of you are aware, the Town of Weston experienced devastating flooding on July 9th and 10th, 2023 - with flood waters at a much higher level than when Hurricane Irene came through the Village in 2011. While we were fortunate to not sustain damage to our classroom spaces, river water rushed through our property bringing almost 5 feet of water into our basement and a path of destruction through our outdoor space. A complete replacement of our major mechanical systems and rebuilding of our grounds is needed in the next several weeks to prepare for the 2023-2024 school year.
On July 15th, over 100 enthusiastic volunteers descended upon our little schoolhouse to scrub, rake, shovel, and demolish the aftermath and debris. Alumni stopped by to share their memories, pictures, and report cards (!) from their treasured time at the school on the Village Green. This tremendous effort allowed us to prepare for a rebuilding effort. Our community is AMAZING!
Our RECOVERY EFFORT
We anticipate the costs to replace all that we have lost or that had to be disposed of due to contamination or damage will be close to $50,000, very little if any of which we believe will be covered by insurance. We have already had individuals and businesses step up to help us fund our rebuilding effort, but need a significant amount of support to make progress on our reopening this fall. The Little School is critical to our community as the leading early childhood education center within the Mountain Towns, providing necessary childcare for so many working families.
Given the level of sponsorship needed to rebuild, we are kindly asking for your support at this time.
While all donations related to flood recovery will be recognized, we will be commemorating our generous sponsors with a permanent (flood resistant!) memorial on our grounds to be celebrated at our new playground dedication this Fall.
